elegant red and ivory washington dc wedding: getting ready

I always love taking you on a look back at our recent weddings. This time, I'd like to introduce you to Ellen and Chris, who married in Washington, D.C., in November 2015. We were delighted to work with this lovely couple and their families.

Ellen and Chris planned an entire gracious D.C. wedding weekend for their guests. Those who arrived on Friday were treated to a private tour and luncheon at Mount Vernon, then there was a fabulous Italian cooking lesson that doubled as the rehearsal dinner that evening at Casa Italiana in Washington, D.C. Saturday was reserved for wedding festivities, of course, then the couple said their farewells to their guests at a lovely brunch at the Mayflower Hotel on Sunday.

We'll start our look at their elegant wedding with a few gorgeous images of getting ready time on Saturday. Ellen and Chris married at St. John's Church at Lafayette Square, but the remainder of the wedding day took place at a private location in Washington, D.C.

For those of you currently planning your weddings, there's an important lesson in these photographs: Remember to choose a getting ready location that's beautiful and offers plenty of natural light! Your photographer will love you for it, and you'll be so happy that you made the effort when your getting ready photos are as sundrenched as these. What wonderful memories are captured here!

The women prepped on one side of the house, and it was a flurry of activity! Hair stylists from Blo Blow Dry Bar's nearby Dupont Circle location came to the venue, as did makeup pros Marti Wright and Marcia Simpson from Tica Beauty.

Ellen's stunning wedding gown, which she purchased at Elegance by Roya in Alexandria, Virginia, was by Rosa Clará. I love the elegant silhouette, the design of the lace bodice, and that train! Gorgeous.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the house, the guys were getting ready — special socks and all! Their suite also provided the prop for a perfect ring shot for this globetrotting couple.

Ellen and Chris chose to do a first look at the house before departing for the ceremony. We'll see that in a future post, but for now, I love these shots of them waiting to see one another. Such anticipation! Aren't they wonderful? And that photo of Ellen descending the stairs takes my breath away every time I look at it... even though I look at a lot.
