Pantone Color of the Year Day is one of my favorite days of the year. So favorite, in fact, that I was completely shocked this year when Mr. Husband knew what the 2014 color was before I did! (He heard it on NPR on the way home from work and told me about it as soon as he walked in the door. This is behavior that's probably unique to color nerd event planners' husbands.) I was even more shocked when he told me the color and I found myself completely underwhelmed.
Radiant Orchid just wasn't doing it for me. I mean, sure, I had the initial giddy excitement that I always feel when the new color is announced, then I did the thing I always do next, which is imagine all the fun things I'm going to be able to do with this year's color and . . . I had nothing. It was weird. I completely adored Tangerine Tango in 2012 (still do!) and I liked last year's Emerald quite a lot as well, but this flavor of purple has never been a huge favorite of mine. I was pretty stumped there for a while. Then, after Christmas, I decided to just sit down and play with it and see what happened.
Whoa! Was I ever wrong about Radiant Orchid. Turns out I like it a lot after all! My favorite palette so far teams Radiant Orchid with gold mercury glass, ivory, and espresso. It's warm and luxe and I'd love to see an event dressed up in these colors:
Now check it out teamed up with some hot colors. Wouldn't this be gorgeous for a late summer wedding? Imagine these colors with white globe lights and papel picado:
Teaming Radiant Orchid with pink and grey creates a soft, romantic palette:
It even works well with cool greens and blues:
So, yeah, a couple of days of palette-creating fun and I'm eating my (initially disappointed) words regarding Radiant Orchid. It's actually a really great color! And now I'm all excited about using it.
How about you? Are you embracing this year's color of the year for your upcoming wedding or party? Tell us how!
