should you DIY your wedding or event?

DIY is huge these days.  It's everywhere you look!  There are magazines devoted to DIY projects of all kinds, websites for DIY ideas and social sharing (Hello, Pinterest!  Yes, we love it too.), blogs, crafting meetups... even a television network!  I could go on and on.  It's no surprise that DIY projects have also become popular for events.  So popular, in fact, that it seems people almost feel obligated to include something handmade in their wedding celebrations and other parties. DIY

What does this mean for your event?  Do you have to DIY?  Of course not.  But if you want to, how do you successfully fit it in?

I tell my clients to start by doing an honest (<--- that honest part is really important!) assessment of themselves and the project they have in mind:

  • What are your talents and interests?
  • How much time will this project take?
  • How much will the project cost?
  • What restrictions might you face?

It's also a good idea to think about your goals:

  • Are you interested in DIY as a way of saving money?
  • Are you hoping to add charm and personality to your event?
  • Are you looking for a craft to help you focus and relax as you prepare for your wedding?
  • All of the above?

Make sure your project will meet your goals, whatever they are.

Be sure to check back this week!  We'll discuss those assessment steps in more detail, we'll take a look at what types of DIY projects are most popular for events these days, and we'll talk about some of the pros and cons of each.

Want a chance to do some instant DIY, right now?  Chime into the discussion!  Are you planning, or did you plan, a DIY project for an event?  How's it going (or how'd it go)?  Do you have a specific question about DIY for weddings or other events?  Let us know!  We'd love to work your comments into our posts this week.
