One afternoon this past summer Mr. Husband and the boys and I found ourselves in Old Town Alexandria with a couple of hours to kill, so we decided to take the little guys to the Torpedo Factory. For those of you who aren't in the D.C. area, the Torpedo Factory was, in fact, an actual torpedo factory during World Wars I and II. After the wars were over and the country no longer needed as many torpedos, the buildings were used for storage of various things. The City of Alexandria eventually purchased the buildings from the U.S. government, and in the 1970s the Torpedo Factory Art Center opened. It's a collection of independent artists' studios and galleries, and it's a really cool place to visit. It's also a fabulous event space, in case you're looking for one.
So anyway, one of the galleries we visited over the summer was Alison Sigethy's. Alison works in glass, and her art is amazing. In addition to creating large one-of-a-kind pieces she also creates some lovely small items, like her Rorschachian Snowflakes.
Aren't they beautiful? Each one is individually created, and like real snowflakes, no two are alike. I love them so much! I can see them hanging over the cake table for a winter wedding, massed over a dance floor to create a sparkling ceiling, hung on a large Christmas tree to be removed by guests as favors, or individually gifted to wedding party members as a one-of-a-kind token of your day. No matter how you use them, these lovely little icy sculptures will add something special to your event.
If you're interested in buying snowflakes in large quantities for your event, then be sure to contact the artist in advance to give her time to create them for you.
If you'd like to meet Alison and see these gorgeous snowflakes in person, then make plans to attend the Torpedo Factory's annual Holiday Open House. This year's Open House will happen on Thursday, December 1st, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. It sounds like a great time: Art, refreshments, prizes, and fun, and it's free!
So what do you think? Do you love these snowflakes as much as we do? How would you use them for your event?
Note: Pretty Entertaining does not accept compensation in any form in return for mention on our blog or website, and we were neither asked to write about this item nor compensated in return for this post by Alison Sigethy or any other company or individual. We just love these beautiful snowflakes, and we thought you might too!
