Several weeks ago, I got the nicest email inquiry in my inbox from bride-to-be Katie: I love the little chalk boards you made! Could you make more?
Don't you love it when people love what you do? I do! And of course I was excited about making Katie a set of custom chalkboards for her upcoming wedding.
Side note: This color is so popular, and I'm so tired of calling it "black-brown", that I'm hereby officially renaming it Ilex Brown (ilex is the botanical name for holly). So there you go, Holly: A color with your name on it. Sort of. Hee.
Back to Katie: She needed 25 chalkboards for her wedding, so our studio was, for a few days, full of chalkboards in various stages of completion. One of these days I'll remember to take some photos of in-progress work so you can see what my days look like.
All finished, the chalkboards look like this:
My plan, since Katie's wedding will take place this fall, was to photograph these outside under our beautiful Japanese maple tree, which looks like a little breath of autumn from the time it leafs out in the spring until the leaves drop in the fall. But then we had a whole day of rain followed by a hurricane and, well, that put the kaibosh on that plan...
Only briefly deterred, I decided to bring autumn indoors by sketching Japanese maple leaves on each chalkboard and setting up a little photoshoot in my husband's studio. Aren't they cute? And I'm sure whatever Katie has planned for her chalkboards will be just as fun.
As always with this great brown undercoat, the final effect is warm and weathered and every chalkboard is unique. The brown peeks through along the edges and around the corners, and even highlights the wood grain on the face of the chalkboard.
Thank you so much, Katie, for making us a small part of your wedding day. We hope you and your guests love your chalkboards, and that your wedding day is everything you're dreaming of!
